Dwyane Wade’s Family: Introducing His Children and Their Mothers

Former NBA star Dwyane Wade is the proud parent of a large blended family.

The Olympic gold medalist became a father in 2002, the same year he wed his high school sweetheart, Siohvaughn Funches. The couple parted ways in 2007 and share a son, Zaire, and a daughter, Zaya. Wade initiated divorce proceedings in 2010, leading to a contentious court battle, where he was awarded sole custody of the two children in 2011.

Years later, Funches accused her ex-husband of exploiting Zaya for his own benefit after Wade filed to legally change her name to Zaya and her gender to female.

Wade promptly dismissed the “serious and harmful” allegations in a detailed note shared on Instagram. “While it doesn’t surprise us that Siohvaughn would try to undermine Zaya’s identity and continually attempts to tarnish my reputation, I feel deeply disappointed that she finds ways to prioritize herself and HER needs over those of her children,” he wrote in November 2022. “This report emerged while Zaya was in class. She is a child who has maintained a 4.0 GPA in honors classes while dealing with all this unsolicited and damaging attention and commentary regarding her gender and sexuality from those unwilling to listen to her, let alone understand her.”

At that time, Wade commended Gabrielle Union for her unwavering support of both him and Zaya’s journey. The couple started dating in 2008 and had a brief breakup five years later before getting engaged in 2013. They tied the knot the following year.
