Exploring the Bond Between Hilaria Baldwin and Her Stepdaughter Ireland Baldwin
Hilaria Baldwin and her stepdaughter Ireland Baldwin have nurtured a remarkable bond through the years.
Hilaria became Ireland’s stepmother after her marriage to Alec Baldwin in 2012. Alec was previously married to Kim Basinger, with whom he shares Ireland, born in October 1995.
With only an 11-year age difference, Hilaria finds their relationship “unique.”
“First of all, I am 11 years older than her, I didn’t raise her and we find tremendous humor in that,” Hilaria mentioned during a March 2025 episode of her and Alec’s reality series The Baldwins.
Although Ireland has had her share of ups and downs with her father, her relationship with Hilaria has remained strong. Ireland even participated in Alec and Hilaria’s vow renewal ceremony in 2017. (Hilaria and Alec are parents to seven children: sons Carmen, Rafael, Leonardo, Romeo, and Eduardo, as well as daughters María and Ilaria.)

Refusing to Be a ‘Wicked Stepmother’
Before marrying Alec, Hilaria made it clear that she wanted to earn Ireland’s approval.
“When I met her, I told Alec, ‘If she doesn’t like me, I am not staying,’” the yoga instructor stated during a March 2025 episode of The Baldwins. “I [was] not going to be the wicked stepmother. My role is not to join a family and create issues.”
Fortunately, Ireland accepted Hilaria with open arms.
“[She] immediately welcomed me and we have never fought, and it is so easy,” Hilaria remarked.
Her Big Blended Family
Iceland expressed her thoughts on social media when Hilaria welcomed her seventh sibling.
“I get countless messages from people who are kind of alarmingly obsessed with my father and his family,” she posted on Instagram in April 2022. “I think a lot of people assume my views on any of this; well, here it is for free — it’s none of my business. … I don’t care.”
Forming a Friendship
Hilaria has shared her gratitude for their wonderful dynamic.
“I never tried to be her mom, which I think is really important. I met her when she was 15 years old, and we are more like girlfriends,” she exclusively told Us Weekly in March 2020. “Sometimes she calls me for advice, and sometimes I call her. We have never had a single bad moment in our relationship.”
1 of Hilaria’s Kids
Ensuring that Ireland felt included with her siblings has been vital for Hilaria’s relationship with her stepdaughter.
“I think it’s a lot about me respecting boundaries,” Hilaria explained to Us in March 2020. “I always remind her that she’s just as important as my kids who I gave birth to, especially since she was an only child for quite a while.”
Embracing the Stepmom Role
Hilaria shared her feelings about becoming a parental figure in Ireland’s life.
“You often hear horror stories about evil stepparents, and I wanted to ensure I honored the family I was marrying into when I wed Alec. I love my stepdaughter as much as I love my biological children, and I become a protective ‘mommy lioness’ when I see comments suggesting otherwise,” she wrote on Instagram in August 2019, posting a picture with Ireland. “Having a stepchild can be delicate, especially one who is already grown. My relationship with her is successful because I never tried to take on the role of her mother. She has an excellent mother, whom I respect deeply.”
Hilaria added that she and Ireland “love each other” and support one another during family milestones.
“She knows I am here for her … and I know she is here for me. I admire her, look up to her (not just height wise 😂) … she gave her father away at our wedding and is the best big sister anyone could wish for … and I give her space,” she concluded. “I never expect her to be anyone other than herself. As someone who loves her, my role was not to interfere but rather to respect her first 15 years and then become a part of that in a way that works for everyone.”
Defending Hilaria Amid Accent Scandal
When Hilaria faced accusations of faking her Spanish accent, Ireland defended her stepmother.
“She is a good person,” she stated in a December 2020 Instagram Story. “She’s a loving person who has always respected my relationship with my dad, and I have a great relationship with her. … Hilaria is a fantastic mother who cares for her kids immensely, and that’s really what matters to me.”
