Is Cristiano Ronaldo Retiring? His Thoughts on What Lies Ahead
Cristiano Ronaldo exited the field at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Monday, July 6, with tears in his eyes as his Portugal team lost 1-0 to Spain in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
At 41, Ronaldo has expressed that this would be his last World Cup, yet he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of representing Portugal on the international stage again.
“I’m saddened to leave the World Cup like this,” he told reporters following the match. “As I mentioned yesterday in the press conference, I’ve poured my heart into this; I’ve given my best and depart with a clear conscience. This is soccer, the life of a soccer player. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and you must move forward.”
Ronaldo has donned the Portugal jersey for over twenty years and became the first male player to score in six different World Cups during this tournament. His 11 World Cup goals rank him ninth on the all-time list.
Although he guided his country to a European Championship in 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles, the elusive World Cup title remains unattained.
Still, he expressed satisfaction with his accomplishments.
“I have secured three titles for Portugal,” he shared. “Before Cristiano, Portugal had no titles. I am content.”
He further stated, “Honestly, the greatest title I won with the national team was in 2016, which, in my opinion, holds the same significance as a World Cup. So I leave with a clean conscience, and that’s that. Tomorrow is a new day, and life continues.”
His national team coach, Roberto Martínez, remarked post-match that Ronaldo has been an “exemplary captain.”
“When I joined Portugal, there was much confusion and doubt regarding Cristiano, and he has proven to be a role model—not only through goals and assists but also in his commitment and passion for the game,” he stated. “He’s a true example. We must celebrate him.”
“We’re speaking of an icon in football,” he continued. “There aren’t many Cristiano Ronaldos. We should be grateful for what he contributed at this World Cup. He aimed to win it—as a player, a captain, and on a personal level; we will carry this with us forever, recognizing the human behind the athlete.”
With Ronaldo still contemplating playing for Portugal in the near future, fans speculate he may reconsider and pursue one more World Cup opportunity. Portugal is set to co-host the 2030 event alongside Morocco and Spain.
