Jana Kramer Discusses Why DWTS Was Her Least Liked Competition Show
Jana Kramer looks back on her time with Dancing With The Stars with mixed feelings.
“I hated Dancing With The Stars because it highlighted a huge insecurity for me since I don’t know how to dance,” Kramer, 41, revealed during the episode of her “Unmask and Unwhine” podcast that aired on Wednesday, March 26.
Kramer discussed her experiences on The Masked Singer companion podcast alongside Candace Cameron Bure, noting how the two reality shows differ.
“With [The Masked Singer], you wear a mask and just have fun,” Kramer expressed, adding, “I shouldn’t say I hated Dancing With The Stars. It was more about my own insecurities. It was definitely my least favorite show.”
The former One Tree Hill star and Bure have both participated in the two reality competitions. In 2016, Kramer and professional dancer Gleb Savchenko secured fourth place on DWTS, and she was unmasked as Royal Knight on The Masked Singer last year.
Bure, who just revealed herself as Cherry Blossom on The Masked Singer, also finished in third place on DWTS with partner Mark Ballas in 2014.
During their chat on “Unmask and Unwhine,” Bure, 48, mirrored Kramer’s sentiments about both shows, stating, “[I feel the same] in that I felt insecure during Dancing With The Stars yet cherished that journey immensely.”
“I constantly tell everyone, ‘Participate in Dancing With The Stars, it’s phenomenal,’” she continued.
The former Full House actress reminisced that her only regret from her time on The Masked Singer was being eliminated so soon.
“I felt let down to be the first eliminated in my group,” she shared. “However, while we were waiting for results, my husband [Valeri Bure] was beside me, and my nerves were through the roof—my cortisol levels were skyrocketing.”
“I thought, ‘I hope I’m the first one out because I really don’t want to go through this again. Singing in front of people terrifies me,’” she recounted. “But, of course, when they called my name, I was like, ‘What? This isn’t fair!’”
Kramer noted she experienced similar feelings during her own last episode of The Masked Singer, revealing that she told her husband Allan Russell backstage that she was “ready to go home.”
“We were about to get married,” she clarified. “I felt, ‘I’m ready to head home. I’ve performed a few shows; that’s cool, I want to leave.’ But when they announced I was done, I felt a bit teary because I didn’t want to go. I dislike losing!”
Kramer has extensive experience in competition shows, starting her journey on CMT’s brief country music series Can You Duet in 2008. She later achieved major success with her roles in One Tree Hill and Friday Night Lights before joining the DWTS stage in 2016.
The Masked Singer airs on Fox Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET, while Dancing With The Stars is showcased on ABC and Disney+.
