Kelly Clarkson Discusses Her Love Life and Family After Divorce
Kelly Clarkson is optimistic about experiencing her “unicorn moment” after her divorce, although she’s currently too busy to focus on dating.
“I hope it does [happen for me],” she shared with Today’s Jenna Bush Hager during an interview regarding her new song “Where Have You Been” on Tuesday, May 6. “I’m not actively seeking a relationship, but I’m also not closed off to it. I’m juggling a lot as a mom right now. Honestly, my kids’ schedules feel more hectic than mine!”
At 43, Clarkson strives to be present for her children, River Rose, 10, and Remy, 9 — whom she co-parents with Brandon Blackstock — though she admits it can be quite challenging at times.
“I find myself racing from my show to baseball practice, just trying to be there,” she told Bush Hager, 43, and guest cohost Matt Rogers. “It’s quite a lot. My mom reminds me, ‘I was a single mom too. I couldn’t make it to every event. They’ll be okay. You turned out fine.’”
Clarkson emphasized that her family acts as “a cute little unit,” but she’s also focusing on her personal growth during this phase of life.
“I’m making an effort to be more responsible. For Mother’s Day weekend, I have a few shows, but my kids won’t be attending. This gives me a chance to enjoy some adult time with my band,” she explained.
The singer of “Since You’ve Been Gone” is gearing up for her Las Vegas residency this summer at Caesars Palace, which promises to be her most enticing show yet. (The residency runs from July 4 to November 15, featuring 18 performances.) While discussing the music video for “Where Have You Been,” Clarkson mentioned her desire for a sultry aesthetic and how she finally had a say in her outfits.
“I lost some weight and insisted, ‘Dress me in something form-fitting!’ ‘Cause I’m not sure how long this will last,” she joked. “Honestly, I’ve faced a lot of harsh opinions in my career about my appearance. I’ve struggled to express myself fully, and this was an opportunity to showcase a sexy vibe for a song that’s all about discovering that blissful, unexpected moment in life.”
The music video, released on May 2, has already garnered over 1.3 million views.
Clarkson revealed that the song was inspired by a poignant moment in season 3 of Only Murders in the Building, featuring Meryl Streep’s Loretta and Martin Short’s Oliver.
“The emotion in [Short’s] expression when he said, ‘Where have you been,’ really struck me,” Clarkson recalled. “I found myself rewatching it because it was so beautifully rendered, inspiring me to write a song stemming from that moment.”
