Kim Kardashian Suggests Marilyn Monroe’s Dress May Have Suffered Damage
Kim Kardashian seemingly suggested that she may have indeed caused some damage to Marilyn Monroe’s legendary dress during the 2022 Met Gala.
Kardashian, 45, discussed her experience wearing Monroe’s Bob Mackie and Jean Louis dress—an act that attracted criticism from fans—while undergoing a lie detector test featured on Vanity Fair’s YouTube channel on Monday, November 3.
During the video, Teyana Taylor asked, “I want to settle this for once and for all. Did you mess up Marilyn Monroe’s dress?”
Kardashian, glancing at a photo of herself in the dress, responded, “No.”
Taylor, 34, sought clarification, “So, you’re saying it was already messed up when it got to you?”
Kardashian shook her head, saying, “I don’t know how it got to me. But it’s perfect now.”
With a slightly skeptical look, Taylor pressed, “Who repaired it?”
The Kardashians star smiled lightly and stated she didn’t “know” who restored the dress.
Taylor continued, “So, when you tried it on, what was the dress like?”
Kardashian evaded the question, warning Taylor that she might “cost her like $10 million in insurance.”
“Let’s move on,” she concluded, as Taylor chuckled in the background.
The Skims founder then inquired if the test administrator deemed her “truthful.”
“All of it is true,” the administrator asserted. Taylor cheered, while Kardashian’s expression appeared startled.
Taylor questioned Kardashian about her surprised look upon hearing the test indicated she was truthful, to which she mischievously responded that she was “not” surprised.
By the end of the test, Kardashian was asked if she had lied “at any point during [the] interview and [not caught].”
She answered, “Maybe.”
The test administrator then confirmed that the machine registered some dishonesty.
When Kardashian donned Monroe’s dress—first revealed by the late actress in 1962 during her iconic “Happy Birthday” performance for President John F. Kennedy—she wore it with the back unzipped to accommodate her figure.
On the red carpet, she revealed to Vogue that she lost 16 pounds in just three weeks to fit into the garment.
“It was this or nothing,” she explained, adding she achieved the weight loss by using “a sauna suit twice a day [and running] on the treadmill.” She also “completely cut out all sugar and all carbs,” consuming only the “cleanest veggies and protein.”
After her weight loss journey, Kardashian expressed her joy when the dress fit, shedding “tears of joy” in the process.
Following the event, fans criticized Kardashian for donning the dress, alleging that she had caused damage to it.
“The dress now displays signs of wear, with several crystals missing or hanging off,” one online user remarked on X, presenting a before-and-after comparison of the dress. Another commenter added, “Why, oh why. This is akin to entering the Louvre and dousing the Mona Lisa in paint thinner. Fashion conservation is crucial. This is a destruction of a priceless historical artifact, all for a stroll down a red carpet. It’s sickening.”
In the aftermath of the backlash, Ripley’s VP of Publishing and Licensing, Amanda Joiner, issued a statement in June 2022, asserting that the dress remained undamaged during Kardashian’s wear.
“From the bottom of the Met steps, where Kim donned the dress, to the top where it was returned, the dress was in the same condition it started in,” the statement read.
During the gala, Kardashian changed into a replica of the dress.
