Matt Lauria from Sheriff Country Hints at Mickey and Boone’s Romance in Season 2
Sheriff Country has left the future of Mickey and Boone’s romance uncertain—does that mean all hope is lost going into season 2?
In the season 1 finale on Friday, May 22, Mickey’s (Morena Baccarin) feelings for Boone (Matt Lauria) seemed clearer to her after he was shot while on duty. However, Boone was unaware that Mickey was beginning to sort out her emotions, and he appeared to be moving on right in front of her.
“You’re asking me questions that are so far above my pay grade,” Lauria joked exclusively to Us Weekly about the possibilities of Mickey and Boone exploring their connection in season 2. “The emotional proximity and the trust [between them] is everything. That is what drives so much of the story toward the end of the season.”
Showrunner Matt Lopez also shared insights into Mickey’s state of mind as the season concluded.
“There’s just this intimacy that gets forged, and obviously Mickey and Boone face challenges in the early part of season 1, but they have this strong foundation of friendship,” he elaborated. “It’s evident [in the finale] that feelings are not one-sided. Mickey has to wonder, ‘Did I choose a piece of coal over a diamond?’”
He added: “It’s complicated in meaningful ways, but that tension and the question of what to do next will definitely carry into season 2. There’s a medical examiner character with whom Boone shares great chemistry. Did Mickey possibly miss her chance? Was there a door that opened for just a moment, and has it now closed? Those are all elements we’ll explore in season 2.”
Lopez remained ambiguous about this being a slow-burn romance, telling Us, “Fans send me Reddit posts and even those who root for them to come together often say, ‘But I hope it doesn’t happen too quickly.’”
Lauria is enthusiastic about what’s next for Boone.
“Boone is embracing Edgewater for what it is,” he mentioned. “That’s been his core journey, which also allowed him to delve into his feelings for Mickey. Normally, crossing that boundary would be difficult for him.”
He continued: “But there’s also a more human aspect to all of this. It matters because he has seen Mickey take a compassionate approach with people time and again and have it yield results. This played a significant role in prompting Boone to confront his feelings for Mickey—only to face rejection.”
Lauria hopes viewers will discover even more about Boone in season 2, stating, “He has kept many things close to his chest—including a secret wife. I’d love to explore more about who this guy really is.”
Sheriff Country is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
