Nobody Wants This Season 2 Finale Explained: Who Broke Up? Who Got Engaged?
Season 2 of Nobody Wants This upped the ante with more breakups, a conversion, and an engagement — but where did each character end up?
The acclaimed Netflix series resumed with Joanne (Kristen Bell) and Noah (Adam Brody) deciding to take their unexpected romance seriously. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until Noah had to leave his congregation after being overlooked for a job because Joanne identified as agnostic.
Noah eventually found a more progressive temple, easing the pressure on Joanne regarding her potential conversion to Judaism. However, this didn’t last long, as an unexpected eviction made Joanne realize she was ready to move in with Noah — while he believed they were rushing into things.
This led to a significant argument in the season 2 finale. Although Noah and Joanne split up, they managed to reconcile when Noah recognized that Joanne was his soulmate. Meanwhile, Joanne concluded that she could envision herself converting.
Not all characters experienced a happy resolution by the end of the season, which premiered on Thursday, October 23. Morgan (Justine Lupe) found a romantic connection with Dr. Andy (Arian Moayed), only to discover that he was, in fact, both a therapist and her therapist.
Despite Joanne’s concerns, Morgan chose to pursue her relationship with Dr. Andy, ultimately getting engaged. However, facing undeniable red flags, she called off their engagement at the party. She also began to grow closer to Sasha (Timothy Simons), whose marriage with Esther (Jackie Tohn) faced serious difficulties.
Throughout the season, Esther struggled with her happiness. Realizing she was unhappy, she requested a break from Sasha, but it wasn’t clear if it was over for good. Meanwhile, in season 2, Morgan and Joanne’s mother, Lynn (Stephanie Faracy), was the only character to convert to Judaism so far, while Joanne made strides in her relationship with Noah’s mother, Bina (Tovah Feldshuh).
“We aimed to conclude with romance, not religion,” creator Erin Foster shared with Tudum regarding the finale. “The romantic element is him declaring, ‘I don’t care what you are, I’m choosing you.’ We don’t need to hear her exclaiming, ‘Oh my God, you’re not going to believe this. I’ve been Jewish this entire time.’ Because we know that’s on the horizon.”
She continued: “She’s striving so hard to understand that she fails to see it. She longs for something that provides her with structure, purpose, boundaries, values, and traditions. Judaism offers all of that. … She’s relishing many aspects of Judaism,” Foster noted. “Yet, she keeps anticipating that God will descend from the heavens and declare, ‘And now you’re Jewish!’”
Looking ahead, Noah and Joanne will find themselves in a transformed relationship.
“It’s not Noah against Joanne,” Bell explained to Tudum. “It’s Joanne and Noah against the challenge, which I believe is a healthy perspective for any relationship.”
Nobody Wants This is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
