Sean Lowe Discusses Son Isaiah’s Type 1 Diabetes Diagnosis
The Bachelor alum Sean Lowe has publicly addressed his son’s type 1 diabetes diagnosis.
“[It’s] been quite a lot to absorb,” Lowe, 42, shared in an Instagram video on Thursday, July 23. He explained that his wife, Catherine Giudici, had recently taken their children—Samuel, 10, Isaiah, 8, and Mia, 6—to a routine pediatric check-up, where the doctor noticed some weight loss in Isaiah.
After Giudici, 40, informed the doctor about Isaiah’s increased urination, a glucose test was ordered, leading them to the hospital.
“We spent Tuesday to Friday there, and it was overwhelming,” Lowe continued. “It was tough because, as far as we were concerned, and Isaiah thought, he was a healthy kid. Other than frequent urination, he showed no symptoms, and suddenly he’s undergoing blood tests and receiving shots every two hours, which, understandably, he loathes as an 8-year-old.”
Lowe expressed that it was “incredibly challenging” to see his son “essentially scream for assistance.”
“We’re trying to explain, ‘Hey champ, you have to. It’s beneficial for you. It’s medicine.’ But obviously, 8-year-olds don’t fully grasp this,” he reflected. “Nevertheless, we are thankful our pediatrician was perceptive enough to conduct the blood test, and all the doctors and nurses at Children’s Health in Dallas were incredible.”
Lowe shared that they are “managing,” yet Isaiah has found it tough to cope with the five daily shots.
“The hardest part, aside from that, is accepting that his freedom to snack whenever or go to a friend’s house for lunch is restricted; we now have to carefully monitor his carbs and insulin,” he elaborated. “But we’re continually reassured that it will become normal. This is his new normal, and he’s adapting well. Although he despises the shots, he bounces back to his usual self right after.”
Lowe wrapped up by expressing gratitude for the support from fans and assured his followers that he will provide updates.
“God is good, and we have faith that Isaiah will be OK,” he added.
Giudici first disclosed Isaiah’s diagnosis on Instagram on Tuesday, July 21.
“This past week has been very challenging for the Lowes. Our beloved Isaiah was admitted to Children’s Hospital and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes,” she stated. “Our attentive pediatrician picked up on some symptoms during our annual check-up that alarmed her.”
She added, “He had lost 11 pounds since his last visit (we initially thought it was just a growth spurt) and was drinking and urinating excessively (it’s really hot here in summer). He was otherwise healthy and active; after running some tests, she referred us to the emergency room based on the concerning results. I’m grateful for the nurses, doctors, and staff who provided us with a crash course on his condition over four days.”
Giudici then commended Isaiah for his remarkable resilience throughout his treatment.
“This brave boy has faced numerous injections, spent four days away from home, and adjusted to a lifestyle and routine that feels entirely unfamiliar,” she continued. “He has endured it all while maintaining his playful spirit and an inexplicable joy. There have been many tears, pain, and confusion, but he has truly been a trooper, no doubt about it.”
