Selena Gomez Reveals Steve Martin and Martin Short Eat the ‘Same Thing’
Steve Martin and Martin Short’s distinct dietary preferences are starting to influence their Only Murders in the Building co-star Selena Gomez.
“I sit there and read the news with them every day … and they eat the same thing daily,” Gomez, 32, joked during her appearance with fiancé Benny Blanco on Hot Ones. “And now, I eat the same thing every day.”
According to the pop star, Martin, 79, and Short, 74, alternate between a tuna sandwich with Dijon mustard or a sushi platter during Only Murders breaks.
“Now, all I eat is a chicken salad sandwich,” Gomez shared. “For some reason, I look forward to my meal alongside theirs. I feel like my lingo sometimes aligns with that of an old soul; at times, I’ll say, ‘Yes, no and I remember whilst I was.’ It’s, like, what am I saying? That’s just Steve and Marty. They’re incredible.”
Gomez has formed a close bond with the two Saturday Night Live alums since they were all cast in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building in 2021. In the show, which is currently producing its fifth season, the unlikely trio investigates a series of mysterious deaths in their New York City neighborhood.
“You get a list of names, and you think, Sure, they’d be good, they’d be good, and then they say, ‘What about Selena Gomez?’ and it’s just — yes, absolutely. There was no question other than ‘Can we get her?’” Martin recounted to Vogue in 2021. “We knew she would enhance the show in countless ways, primarily her talent. Her performance is nuanced and mature. She’s learned to underplay when necessary.”
He continued, “Marty and I are pretty energetic, and she’s this grounded, solid foundation. She’s wonderfully, intensely low-key. She’s just focused. And Marty and I joke around continually, and we wondered if she would be open to it. But now we see ourselves as the Three Musketeers.”
Both Martin and Short were thrilled when Gomez became engaged to producer Blanco, 37, in December 2024.
“Steve made certain to send an email to my assistant so that she could relay his congratulations to me,” Gomez shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in January. “That’s how he communicates. He always tries to be polite. It’s very considerate, though a little text would suffice.”
At that moment, host Jimmy Kimmel suggested that both Martin and Short should serve as ring bearers at Gomez’s wedding.
“That would be adorable,” Gomez exclaimed, while Short couldn’t help but admire her marquise-shaped diamond ring.
