‘The Voice’ Coaches Over the Years: Departures and Reasons Behind Them
The Voice quickly garnered immense popularity after its debut on NBC in 2011, with Carson Daly as the host and a talented panel of coaches on the quest to discover the next superstar.
During the inaugural season, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, CeeLo Green, and Adam Levine occupied the coaches’ chairs, each contributing their unique insights to the competition. Aguilera and Green departed before season 4, making way for Shakira and Usher as temporary replacements. The original panel reunited for season 5, only to leave once more in season 6.
Aguilera made a brief return as a part-time adviser in season 7 and rejoined as a coach for seasons 8 and 10, announcing her exit in 2016. She later described the show as an “energy sucker” in her life.
“It evolved into something that didn’t align with what I had envisioned in season 1. … You come to understand it’s less about music and more about creating compelling television moments and crafting a narrative,” she stated in an interview with Billboard magazine in 2018. “I never entered this industry to become a television show host and follow all these [rules]. … Especially as a woman: ‘You can’t wear this, can’t say that.’ I often found myself on that show yearning to express myself through my clothing, makeup, or hair. That was my sole outlet.”
