Bode Miller’s Wife Commemorates 8 Years Since Their Daughter’s Tragic Drowning

Bode Miller’s wife, Morgan Miller, is calling on parents to emphasize water safety as they remember the eight-year anniversary of the tragic drowning of their daughter, Emmy.

“8 Years,” Morgan, 39, shared on her Instagram Story on Wednesday, June 11, alongside a nostalgic photo of Emmy in a hospital room. “Imagine witnessing this and not doing everything you can to prevent it from happening to you….”

In a subsequent post, Morgan highlighted a message from swimming expert and aquatic behavior specialist Karen Chavez.

“We don’t discuss water safety strategies out of judgment. We do it because we understand the harsh truths of what can happen,” Chavez stated via her Instagram Story. “We discuss it because the loss of a child to drowning is deeply traumatic. With more research and initiatives, we know it can be prevented. When you know better, you do better. Sweet Emmy is one of the reasons we advocate at @CastingHope. Thank you for sharing, @Morganebeck.”

Morgan and Bode’s world changed forever when their daughter drowned in June 2018 at just 19 months old.

“I opened the door, and she was floating face down in the pool,” Morgan recounted in an interview with CBS This Morning in August 2021. “I jumped in, pulled her out, and started CPR… Every time I close my eyes at night, it plays in my mind. It happens so quickly.”

Since Emmy’s passing, both Bode, 48, and Morgan have leveraged their platforms to advocate for water safety awareness.

During a recent segment on the Today show, the couple provided practical advice for parents to help ensure their children remain safe around water.

“If you can crawl, you must be able to float,” Morgan shared on May 28. “If you can walk, you must be able to swim.”

Morgan urged parents to think about enrolling their children in swim lessons as early as 12 months. Although some kids may resist or find it unenjoyable at first, the former professional volleyball player reminded parents that safety should be a priority.

“Car accidents used to be the No. 1 cause of death, and now we have car seats. How often do we put a child in a car seat while they kick and scream?” she asked. “But we do it because it’s the right thing and ensures their safety.”
