The last episode of “Chicago Fire,” titled “Quicksand,” aired on Nov. 20, 2024. In the midseason finale, Herrmann (David Eigenberg) and Mouch were preparing for their officer exams.

When asked if he felt ready to take on the role of a firehouse captain, Eigenberg responded to NBC Insider: “Do the pants fit? Do the shoes fit? … I would embrace the chief role, but preparation is just part of it. Life can unfold in unexpected ways.”

Meanwhile, Cruz faced a haunting incident from his past during the episode. In Season 1, he had left a man named Flaco (José Antonio García) behind in a burning building after the gang leader menaced Cruz’s brother Leon (Jeff Lima).

In the midseason finale for Season 13, Leon approached Cruz to discuss Flaco’s cousin, a former gang member, who was now on parole and potentially in harm’s way after his release from prison.

At the same time, Cruz began discovering mysterious pendants at various locations. After testing one, he found out it contained ashes and questioned whether they were Flaco’s remains.

Later in the episode, while at church, Cruz was confronted by Flaco’s cousin, who accused him of leaving Flaco to die.
