Shawn Hatosy of The Pitt Discusses Season 3 Comeback Following Cast Departures
Shawn Hatosy discussed his return to The Pitt for season 3, especially after the show experienced several unexpected cast departures and changes.
“We begin filming in a couple of weeks, and I haven’t even seen the episode yet. It hasn’t been sent to me, but I’m aware that I’m returning,” Hatosy, 50, shared exclusively with Us Weekly at the MPTF NextGen Summer Party on Sunday, May 31, confirming his participation in the next season of the hit series.
The actor—who portrays Abbot—made a lighthearted comment about the fan reaction if his character didn’t make a comeback.
“Come on, Abbot will be back,” he reassured Us. “That place wouldn’t run smoothly that night without Abbot.”
The Pitt premiered on HBO Max in January 2025 and centers around a team of employees at a fictional Pittsburgh hospital’s ER during a single 15-hour shift. Alongside Abbot, the cast includes Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball), Dana (Katherine LaNasa), Dr. Mohan (Supriya Ganesh), Dr. McKay (Fiona Dourif), Dr. King (Taylor Dearden), Dr. Santos (Isa Briones), Dr. Whitaker (Gerran Howell), and Javadi (Shabana Azeez).
The Pitt previously received strong reactions from fans after Tracy Ifeachor’s departure following season 1. The outcry intensified in March when it was announced that Ganesh’s character would also be leaving the series after season 2.
While character exits are common in medical dramas, fans have continued to express concern about The Pitt parting ways with cherished characters as it heads into season 3. Hatosy, however, is intrigued to see how The Pitt will progress after the emotionally charged ending of season 2.
Looking forward, Hatosy also commented on the ongoing requests for a night shift spinoff.
“I think it’s a no-brainer. Of course, I wouldn’t want to diminish anything from what’s unfolding on The Pitt, but there are truly fantastic characters,” he stated during his conversation with Us. “There’s an entire other world in the night, creating a different tone.”
Hatosy continued: “I believe it’s an obvious choice for the future. There’s a crew and a set available during our breaks that could be utilized. So, logically, it makes a lot of sense, in my opinion.”
After his standout role on The Pitt, Hatosy has remained active with various opportunities, including a role in Fire Country. The Pitt’s Jalen Thomas Brooks even suggested a cameo of Hatosy on Off Campus.
“Absolutely. I haven’t watched the show yet, but I’m a huge fan of Jalen,” Hatosy responded to Us regarding the possibility of appearing in the popular Prime Video series. “Mateo is a dedicated, ride-or-die member of the night shift. So, I’d do anything to support a fellow night shifter.”
