Married at First Sight UK Star Arrested on Rape Allegations
A contestant from Married at First Sight U.K. has been arrested on allegations of rape.
According to a statement from the U.K.’s Metropolitan Police, “On Thursday, 18 June, officers arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of rape as part of an ongoing investigation. He has since been released on bail while inquiries continue,” as reported by the BBC on July 2.
The individual has not been publicly identified, and the alleged victim remains unnamed in accordance with U.K. law.
Us Weekly has contacted the Metropolitan Police for further comments.
In May, the London police urged “anyone who believes they may have been a victim of sexual assault” during their participation in the show to come forward, as per the BBC.
This public appeal came after the BBC aired a Panorama documentary that highlighted allegations of rape from two women associated with the long-standing Channel 4 reality series, alongside claims of a nonconsensual act by another participant. The allegations pertain to the men they were paired with on the show, all of whom denied the accusations.
One anonymous woman asserted that her husband on the program — described as a “bold social experiment” by Channel 4 — raped her and later threatened her with an acid attack.
Following the revelations in the BBC report, Channel 4 suspended airing all episodes of MAFS U.K. from both television and their streaming service.
In response, Channel 4 announced a review focused on the welfare of contributors involved in the program, which is produced by the independent company CPL.
“MAFS U.K. operates under some of the most careful welfare protocols in the industry,” Channel 4 stated in May. “These protocols include thorough background checks, a Code of Conduct outlining behavioral expectations, daily check-ins with a specialist welfare team, and additional support during and after filming. The safety and wellbeing of all participants are paramount, and we routinely review and enhance duty of care measures.”
“Channel 4 asserts that when concerns regarding contributor welfare were raised, prompt and appropriate measures were taken based on available information at that time,” the network added in response to allegations made by the women involved. “Channel 4 firmly denies any contrary claims.”
Channel 4’s chief executive, Priya Dogra, expressed in a statement, “I extend my sympathy to contributors who have evidently faced distress after their participation in Married at First Sight U.K. We prioritize the wellbeing of our contributors.”
“We take these matters very seriously and are dedicated to leading the industry in our duty of care for contributors,” she affirmed.
